Viewpoint Puerto Angel
Things to do on the Pacific Coast:
The Beaches:
- Playa Panteon & Playa Principal
A 5-10 minute walk from the Viewpoint condo is beach of Playa Principal, the closest beach to Viewpoint and the hub of all fishing activities in the area. The wharf is busiest in the mornings, where local fisherman bring in tuna, red snapper, sailfish, lobster and octopus. The beachfront is lined with chairs and umbrellas in front of restaurants serving this delicious fare, prepared just as you like it. Watch the boats come in while you enjoy a cold cerveza and fresh seafood…this is the Puerto Angel experience.
The old concrete pier located at Playa Principal was built in the 1960′s for the purpose of shipping coffee and wood. However, the new land roads linking Salina Cruz to Oaxaca, placed this port city on the back burner and the pier now stands as a monument, a place for children to play and place for tourists and locals to take leisurely strolls in the sunshine.
- Playa Zipolite
Playa Zipolite is a beach community located in San Pedro Pochutla municipality on the southern coast of Oaxaca state in Mexico between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido. Zipolite is best known as being one of Mexico’s very few nude beaches and for retaining much of the hippie culture that made it notable in the 1960s and 1970s.
Because of the underwater currents residing offshore it is best to use caution when swimming. A volunteer lifeguard team and flag system have been created to indicate where and when it is safest to swim. The beach is currently popular with foreign tourists, especially backpackers, who stay in one of the many rustic cabins or camping spaces that line the beach.
- San Agustinillo
About a 15-minute drive west of Viewpoint down the Oaxaca coast is Playa San Agustinillo. This 1300 meter long beach is divided into 3 sections by rocky jut-outs that reach into the ocean. The far west end of the beach is called Playa Rinconcillo, a well-sheltered area that is great for swimming. This area is where most of the fishermen offer boat and sportfishing tours. The easternmost section is called Playa Aragon which has strong waves and undertow. From June to December it is possible to see Olive Ridley turtles laying their eggs on the beaches of San Agustinillo.
All along the shoreline you can find great little rustic establishments with ecologic and European flair as many Italians and French own here.
- Playa Estacahuite
About a mile East of Puerto Angel is the sleepy beach of Playa Estacahuite. This tight cove shelters you from the currents of the Pacific Ocean and has great little coral nooks making it great for snorkeling and swimming. The 300 foot beach has basic amenities in the form of a pair of palapa restaurants perched picturesquely above the beaches that provide food and drinks.
- Mazunte
Mazunte is a 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) stretch of beach with a secluded cove on the far west end. Boats on this beach offer tours to Zipolite, Puerto Ángel, Estacahuite, La Mina and La Boquilla. Depending on the season, it is possible to see whales, dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays and other aquatic species. Rentals for sports fishing are also available. The main beach and the cove on the west end both have a number of small hotels and restaurants. All beaches have lifeguards during the tourist seasons. There are two other secluded and non-developed beaches in the area, Playa Mermejita on Punta Cometa and Playa Escobilla just west of the principle beaches.
Playa Ventanilla If you really want to get away from it all, head to Ventanilla and take the Tonameca Lagoon tour. This ecotour is 2 hours long and costs $4 per adult. Kids are half price. Amidst mangroves, your guide points out the extensive flora and fauna. Sites include; woodpeckers, kingfishers, herons, crocodiles & iguanas in their natural habitat.
Puerto Angel
Playa Principal & Playa Panteon – As you enter the town of Puerto Angel you will come across this main beach will is generally full of fishing boats…this is Playa Principal and the hub of all fishing activity in town. Here you can catch the fisherman coming in to grab some fresh Dorado, Mahi Mahi, Tuna and more. If it’s relaxation you are looking for, few beaches could conjure up images of sleepy tropical days better than Playa Panteon. Stroll along the seawall from Playa Principal and you will arrive. This is a great place to go for a swim or snorkel, as well as find a tour operator for an excursion to view the sea turtles, dolphins, or whales. Ask for Chepe…he’s a great cook but also operates tours out of here.
Estacahuite
This tight cove shelters you
from the currents of the Pacific Ocean and as such, is a great place to go snorkeling. There are some basic amenities here for drinks and food, and if you desire more you are not far from the town of Puerto Angel – located 200 meters from the town, look for the sign that says Casa Bichu and head to the end.
Puerto Escondido
About an hour drive West of Puerto Angel is this fun surf community. Originally a fishing community, this town quickly became known as a surfing town due to its’ amazing surf waves. Also known as the ‘Mexican Pipeline’, it is one of the top 10 surfing meccas in the world. Puerto Escondido is home to an international surf contest in mid-November and its coastline offers surf breaks for beginners and professionals alike.
Playa Boquilla
This gorgeous beach is located 3km to the northeast of Puerto Angel. It can be a bit difficult to get to down the dirt road of approximately 3km, but once you are there, you will find a series of secluded bungalows called Bahia de la Luna situated on a 200 meter long beach. This is a great place to put the sea kayaks in the water, snorkel, or simply get lost for a while.
From Bahias de Huatulco to Puerto Escondido, the pacific coast of the Oaxaca province counts dozens of beaches. Weather you are looking to sit back and work on your tan, go snorkeling and explore the ocean wild life or catch a wave, the beaches of the Oaxaca province will not disappoint you. Getting Around:
-
Taxi
-
- The taxi has to be the easiest and most cost effective way to get around. There are so many taxis that you don’t have to worry about going to a taxi stand. Simply standing at the side of the road where you are and waiving for a taxi should be sufficient…and you won’t have to wait long. All taxi rates are set in advance based on distance and most local trips should cost you anywhere between $20-$50 pesos. Once you start to stray outside the immediate town expect to barter with your driver on the cost to take you to a destination.

Rental Car Locations
-

-
Bus
-
- There are really multiple levels of buses along the entire coastline but the one that most people will be interested in are the trans-regional buses. The Ado station in Huatulco is the launching point for your journeys to the east or west of Huatulco. These buses are usually very clean with comfortable seats and are consistent with what we would have in Canada or the United States. The fees are very reasonable, and if you don’t mind a couple of extra stops before you reach your ultimate destination, then this is a great way to do it on the cheap. A bus from Huatulco to Puerto Escondido will set you back about $80 pesos.
